JR Jewelers Shows You How

Getting engaged is a great leap in any relationship. An engagement isn’t simply something out of tradition, it is also a symbol of trust, faith and how important a relationship is. If you’re ready to take the next step, then here are some tips on how to choose the right engagement for your girlfriend.

First is, consider her tastes. Do you know her preferences in jewelry well enough to buy her one? Some couples prefer to buy an engagement ring together to avoid getting a ring a fiancé might dislike. But for those who want to pop the big question in style, taking the risk of buying a ring without a fiancé’s knowledge is a must. If you’re worried about buying a ring she dislikes you can ask her mother, sister or close friend to take help you choose. That is if they know her preferences well enough. Or you can ask the jeweler’s if you can exchange the ring for another one just in case your fiancé might prefer something else.

Choose the band. The band is circular metallic part of the ring. Traditionally, gold has been used as the precious metal of choice for jewelry. It comes in 18, 14 and 10 karats. Eighteen karat bands have the highest percentage of gold and are also the most expensive. If you’re not sure as to which metal you can choose, you can always play safe with platinum. However, this beautiful and resilient metal is also the most expensive, so you may want to save up for it first.

Choose the stone. If you’re not sure as to what stone to get, diamond has been the traditional choice. You can never really go wrong with them unless you know if your girlfriend prefers another stone. If you’re a bit tight on budget, a zirconium will exactly like a diamond but a tenth cheaper. In fact, these laboratory-made “diamonds” look so real you’ll need to be an experienced jeweler to tell the differences. Other stones that are popularly used for engagement rings include garnets, rubies and emeralds. Choosing your girlfriend’s birthstone might also be a good idea if she’s partial to it.

Get the right size. Getting the right fit without your girlfriend knowing it can be quite tricky. One way is to sneak out one of her rings and bring it to the jewelers. If she isn’t fond of wearing rings you can always estimate the size. However, this isn’t a very reliable method. If you’re unsure of the size, it would be better to get a ring that’s bigger. That’s because sizing a ring down is much easier than sizing it up.
