Necklaces come in standard lengths that are measured in inches. Typically, they are even numbers rather than odd.

But necklaces also can be custom-fitted to any length, depending on what the designer decides.

Women’s Necklace Lengths

For women, the standard necklace sizes are:

14 Inches — Known as collar length, these necklaces fit tightly around the neck and are best worn with open-necked clothing such as V-necks, scoop necks, boatnecks and off-the-shoulder dresses and sweaters.

16 Inches — Known as a choker, these necklaces fit tightly against the base of the throat and can be worn with practically any outfit.

18 Inches — Known as a princess length, these necklaces rest on the collarbone and, like the choker, go with just about anything you want to wear.

20 to 24 Inches — Known as the matinee length, these necklaces rest between the collarbone and the bust. They are the ideal length for both business and casual wear.

28 to 36 Inches — Known as the opera length, these necklaces rest on the bust or an inch or two below the bust. These are worn mostly with evening wear or with high necklines.

36 to 42 Inches — Known as rope length, these necklaces are wrapped to sit on or just below the center of the bust and are worn with elegant business or evening wear.

Men’s Necklace Lengths

Not surprisingly, men have fewer options when it comes to necklace lengths. Generally, men won’t match their necklaces with their outfits, but will wear them with any type of shirt or sweater.

18 Inches — These necklaces will go to the base of the neck on most men.

20 Inches — These fit to the collarbone and are the most common size for men’s necklaces.

22 Inches — These necklaces fit a few inches below the collarbone. In many instances, a medallion is added to complete the look.

24 Inches — These necklaces rest above the breastbone.

Defining Your Personal Style

Different women have different neck lengths, so what looks good on one may not always be the best choice for another. All necklaces rest on or around your neck, so consider your personal neck length and width.

If you have a long neck, you can wear pretty much any kind of necklace and it’s going to look elegant. But if your neck is shorter — or if you have a lot of wrinkles on your neck — you may be more limited in terms of your necklace choice.

Choker length always look god on women with long, thin necks. But on a short neck, it can make the neck look stubby and wider than it actually is. So if you have a wide, short neck, you probably want to avoid the choker length and go with a necklace between 20 and 24 inches long.

Similarly, if you have a wrinkled neck, chokers may not be for you. Older women with wrinkles often choose longer necklaces. You could even include a pendant to draw the viewer’s eyes away from your neck.

When choosing the right necklace length for you, consider the length and width of your neck, your shape of your face and your body size.
